Article 29: Goals of education - Education must develop every child's personality, talents and abilities to the full. It must encourage the child's respect for human rights, as well as respect for their parents, their own and other cultures, and the environment.

We are a Unicef Rights Respecting School. The Rights Respecting School Award puts children's rights at the heart of schools in the UK.

We aim to be a safe and inspiring place to learn, where children are respected, their talents and nurtured and they are able to thrive.

The Rights Respecting Schools Award embeds these values in daily school life at Oscott Manor School and gives children the best chance to lead happy, healthy lives and to be responsible, active citizens.

Employability

In 2021/2022 all of our KS5 pupils (post 16) were consulted about what opportunities they would like to see to support their independence, experience of a wider world of learning and work and their future college and careers choices.

We worked carefully with trusted providers as well as with our KS5 class teams to offer the following for 2021/22

College Courses with BMET

We offer in conjunction with BMET staff two L1 Diplomas which can be built upon over time to support pupils who have an interest in

  • Health and social care

  • Media and games design

Pupils spend one day a week at the college, experiencing a college environment and benefitting from expert tuition and specialist facilities

Bike Foundry, Allotment & Land Based Studies

Bike Foundry

We work closely with this respected Co-operative based in Stirchley – pupils are given the opportunity to develop their practical engineering and problem-solving skills and experience of a real-life working environment.

Allotment

We have a good relationship with Marsh Lane allotments, only a short walk from the school. Our allotment is only a recent development but provides our pupils with opportunities to learn about how food is grown and how the environment can be supported. There are a number of schools with allotments on the same site and we hope to develop closer links with all of these schools to transform this corner of the Erdington community into one beautiful green space where pupils can learn valuable life and work skills and, in future, maybe even grow crops to sell and share more widely!

Land Based Studies

We work closely with Mount Pleasant farm to provide pupils with the opportunity to complete a BTEC qualification at an appropriate level. Pupils are given the chance to work practically on a real working farm and also benefit from a programme of visits and experiences, understanding animal care and husbandry and a variety of contexts they could consider as part of their future career plans.
