Article 12: Every child has the right to have a say in all matters affecting them, and to have their views taken seriously.
Article 31: Leisure, play and culture - Every child has the right to relax, play and take part in a wide range of cultural and artistic activities.
We are a Unicef Rights Respecting School. The Rights Respecting School Award puts children's rights at the heart of schools in the UK.
We aim to be a safe and inspiring place to learn, where children are respected, their talents and nurtured and they are able to thrive.
The Rights Respecting Schools Award embeds these values in daily school life at Oscott Manor School and gives children the best chance to lead happy, healthy lives and to be responsible, active citizens.
Book Vending Machine
All of our pupils have the opportunity every week, through their efforts in class and their determination to be Ready, Respectful and Safe to earn DOJO points which they can then exchange for a golden token which they can use in our fabulous vending machine and take home, to keep and read, a book suited to their interests and ability.
Pupils have an input into what books go into the vending machine and we encourage all of our pupils to share the books and the reading with their parents and carers and siblings. We hope to ensure that in every home of every pupil we can help build a small home library as a legacy for all of the family to enjoy and learn from.
Parents’ book club
Our Reading Champion organises a monthly book club at a local venue for parents to attend. The group share their reactions and feelings about a book they have all read and are also able to discuss any issues or emotions they have around reading as well as strategies they can use in the home to support their child’s reading development.
Library and Reading
All of our classes have a dedicated reading lesson on their timetable. Our Reading Champion leads many of these lessons and works with the class team to identify strategies and programmes that will help each pupil to develop their reading at their own level. Every class has a weekly opportunity to visit our beautiful library to choose a new book and spend some time quietly enjoying their reading.
Reading Assessment
We use the Salford reading assessment twice a year with classes who are able to access it, assessing each pupil’s reading age and how much they have developed over time. This helps us to provide support and advice to pupils about books and texts they will be able to understand and enjoy and this can also be useful for teachers so they can adapt and design texts that pupils are able to understand and use.
In P3 and P4, we use a Phonics assessment, ensuring we have a good understanding for each pupil of their ability and development in this area of early language use.
